Carbohydrates (the name means carbon plus water) are sugar compounds made by plants when the plants are exposed to light. Carbohydrates are the sugars or energy sources in the diet. Carbohydrates are good source of energy for the body, because they can be converted more easily into glucose, the form of sugar that’s transported and used by the body, than proteins or fats can. There are 2 types o carbohydrates: Complex & Simple carbohydrates 1. Complex carbohydrates are referred as starch or starchy foods. They are found naturally in foods and also refined in processed foods. For ex. Whole grain cereals, Potato, beans, oats, roots vegetables etc. 2. Simple carbohydrates are known as sugars. They are found either in a natural or refined form. Natural sugars are found in fruit and vegetables & Refined sugar are found in biscuits, chocolates, cookies etc.
